그의 다양한 유화·소묘·판화는 당대의 격변하는 역사를 반영하고 있으며, 19세기와 20세기 화가들에게 큰 영향을 주었다.
동판화 연작인 〈전쟁의 참화 Los desastres de la guerra〉(1810~14)는 나폴레옹 침략의 공포를 생생하게 기록하고 있다.
대표작으로는 〈옷을 벗은 마하 Maja desnuda〉와 〈옷을 입은 마하 Maja vestida〉(1800~05경)가 있다.
고야는 사라고사에서 그림공부를 시작했다. 스승은 나폴리에서 공부한 호세 루산 이 마르티네스라는 화가였다.
그뒤 마드리드로 가서 궁정화가인 프란시스코 바예우의 제자가 되었고, 1773년에 스승의 누이동생과 결혼했다.
공부를 계속하기 위해 이탈리아로 갔으며, 1771년에는 로마에 있다가 사라고사로 돌아와 처음으로 대성당에 프레스코를 그리는 중요한 일을 맡았다.
그뒤 10년에 걸쳐 이 일을 했다. 사라고사에서 그린 이 프레스코들과 초기의 다른 종교화들은 당시 스페인에 유행하던
바로크-로코코 양식으로 그려졌으며 특히 베네치아의 위대한 화가 조반니 바티스타 티에폴로의 영향을 강하게 받았다.
고야의 성격이 반항적이고 행동이 난폭했다는 설은 입증할 만한 증거가 거의 없지만 그가 혁명적인 예술가였던 것만은 분명하다.
당대 생활의 거의 모든 측면을 묘사한 그의 수많은 유화·소묘·판화는 그가 살았던 시대의 정치적·사회적 격변을 반영하고 있다.
직속 후계자는 없었지만 독창적인 그의 업적은 19세기 후반 낭만주의에서 사실주의·인상주의에 이르는
유럽의 새로운 미술사조를 이끈 프랑스 화가들에게 큰 영향을 주었는데, 들라크루아도 고야를 숭배한 화가 중의 한 사람이었다.
